Description

Descent Manager MODELVIEW32 was created to view models from Descent 2+3 and FreeSpace 1+2 - one tool for all. It replaces and contains the full functionality of the former tools PMVIEW, RBOTVIEW (partially), D3VIEW, FSVIEW and FS2VIEW by Garry Knudson. However don't see this as competition against Garry Knudson, but more as a further development - because MODELVIEW32 uses the routines from the tools listed above curtesy of Garry (c:.

MODELVIEW32 however goes one step further than 'just' display the models. You can fully analyse them, including listing its textures, submodels and more. You can view individual submodels and textures - filtering the other sub- models/textures out on the display. You can list the texture details (height, width, number of polygons using each texture, etc.) as well as analyse an OOF (Descent 3) or POF (FreeSpace) file's block structure. You can view the pre-defined positions of Descent 2+3 robots, view the segments and guns position (all games), view shields and detail versions (FreeSpace) and more. And finally you can generate a list of all models in one archive file (*.HAM, *.HXM, *.HOG and *.VP are supported archive files) and compare its specs: which FreeSpace ship has the most polygons? This information might also be important if you want to generate an own model later - you then know how many polygons (or points, submodels, ...) are *at least* supported by the game graphic engine.

NEW! MODELVIEW32 now also supports editing FreeSpace 1/2 model data. You can do everything that FSMM (FreeSpace Mission Manager) by Scott Perry can do, however you see your changes WYSIWYG. You can directly see where the gun point you are generating will be and where it will shoot to. You can directly see where your newly generated subsystem and what radius it has. Etc. This makes model editing a lot more efficient. (Note that you still need a tool that generates POF files if you want to create own models. We recommend COB2FS or Segeltuch for this part.)

So then, have fun (c:.

Screenshots

Here are some screenshots (click on the image to get a larger one):

For FreeSpace models, MODELVIEW32 can show all detail modes as well as debris. In the upper right corner you can see a short summary of all available detail modes.
Also, you can toggle shields display on FreeSpace 1/2 fighters. On the center right you can see the list of textures of the current model. Click on a texture and all other textures are filtered out.
Here you see a Descent 2 robot with segments and gun display turned on. The upper right shows you some details about the model.
Here you see a Descent 3 robot with positions. Just click on an item in the position list in the lower right or browse through the available positions using the toolbar buttons.
The Model Comparison Table quickly tells you, which model has the most polygons, etc.
And finally you can see a list of submodels and also display them one at a time. Oh by the way, what we do not show in the pictures now is that you can switch between wireframe, surface and textured mode for all models using the toolbar.
New! This picture shows you some of the new features in the newer versions. On the right you see the POF-editor which lets you edit FreeSpace 1/2 models "WYSIWYG". On the bottom you see the new texture pane which can also show you the block order the file has and the log file with more information.
